Chapter Five

One week before Christmas and things were going well on both fronts. The forestry service brought in three owl chicks that were found. The mother was gone and two campers had taken the eggs and brought them into the forestry station. There was a whole bustle with keeping the chicks warm and fed, it was round the clock care they needed. Wolfe, Connor, Lexi and even Shadow took a turn. Shadow was a dream with animals, even though he was a wolf, they were drawn to him. More than once she found him in the rookery taking care of them well after his shift was over.

The McCoy pack was settling into the farmhouse compound nicely. Wolfe managed to find jobs for the men and women who wanted to work and had skills. Victoria hired Lexi to keep the preserve books in order and to keep the feed and supplies in stock. The kids that were within school age were in a local school in town, and Wolfe kept a stern and careful eye on them all. There was no more trouble from Sia, and the times she visited the farm with Wolfe as construction was going on, they stayed out of each other’s way. She assumed it would be this way until Sia found a mate or another bone to pick with someone else. Their father seemed to keep them in line, and Christine always tried to be polite and friendly when she visited.

A call was coming in at the house when Victoria ran inside, it was a busy day. She and Lexi planned to go into town and buy some Christmas gifts for the kids on the compound. They were still starting off slow, and money was tight. She picked up the phone with a crisp hello and listened to the person the line.

“They did what at the school?” She gasped. “Oh my God, I’ll get Mr. McCoy and we’ll be there with the parents shortly. Thank you, and we are so sorry this happened.”

She grabbed her keys and ran outside where Lexi was waiting. “We have to go to the compound. Jesse and Mark were stealing kids’ money and stuff from the school. They are about to be expelled.”

“Shit!” Lexi said. “They’re sixteen, they know better. But then, they hung out with Joe, and he taught them the bad tricks of the trade.”

“You’ve been with the pack for twenty-seven years, since birth, how did you not get caught up in the mess?” she asked as they slid into the car.

“My mom would have beat my knuckles with a spoon for stealing,” Lexi said. “When I got old enough she almost took Jonas’ head off for trying to marry me off. When she died, she put Shadow in charge of me. He’s like my guardian in a silent kinda way. If anyone feared Shadow, it was Jonas.”

“So, how old is Shadow?” she asked as they went through the gate and she turned in the direction of the farm. It would take them at least ten minutes to get there.
